Your skin is made up of multiple levels, all working together to continually support and rebuild your skin's surface.
- The Epidermis - Upper Level
- The Dermis - Middle Level
- Hypodermis - Lower Support Level
Epidermis
The epidermis is the surface, or upper level of your skin, and protects the body from the environment. It is made up of five sub-layers. The thickness of the epidermis varies both among skin types and location on the body (e.g., the skin on the eyelid is thinner than that on the soles of the feet).
Stratum Corneum
The stratum corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis and is made up of 10 to 30 thin layers of continually shedding cells. As these cells age and wear down, they are sloughed off and new cells take their place. This shedding process, known as cell turnover, slows down with age. Young adult skin can complete the cell turnover process within 28 to 30 days, while the same process can take 45 to 50 days as we get older.
Dermis
The dermis is located beneath the epidermis and is the middle level of the skin. It is the thickest of the three levels of the skin, making up approximately 90 percent of the thickness. Much of the body's moisture supply is stored here.
There are two important types of proteins in the middle level:
- Collagen: supports the epidermis and gives it durability and firmness
- Elastin: keeps the skin flexible and supple
Hypodermis
The hypodermis is located beneath the dermis and is the lower support level. It connects skin to our muscles and tissues below. It cushions the outer levels and gives skin its shape and contour.
